Happy Travels: Peace of Mind While You’re Away

Wed, Oct 12, 2016 at 10:15AM

This season, as you enjoy quick weekend getaways or trips to see the family, we know you want your home to be safe and sound while you’re gone. That’s why we’ve put together a brief list of measures you can take to do just that!

Take a look below to learn more.

Spruce up your space

This tip is purely for the enjoyment and convenience of your family. Before you take a trip out of town, take some time to spruce up your space and make it clean, comfy and cozy. Doing this will make your return home that much more pleasant—and you won’t have to add “cleaning up” to your to-do list which now includes unpacking!

Ask a friend for help

Whenever you go out of town, asking a friend for help can improve your peace of mind tenfold. Leave a key with a friend or family member who can check up on your home, bring in the mail, water your plants, etc. It’s also helpful to notify a trusted neighbor that you’ll be leaving for a few days, since they can check on your home as well and remove packages from your front porch. They’ll also know if a car or person is there that shouldn’t be (though do be sure to let them know if you’re expecting a friend or family member to stop by!).

Stop your mail, if necessary

For longer trips, it may be helpful to stop your mail entirely. You can do this by notifying the USPS of your absence—they can stop, or hold, your mail until you get back so that you don’t have to worry about it piling up while you’re gone.

Improve last-minute security

When you’re gone, you of course want your home to be as safe and secure as possible. In addition to using your home security system, a few easy steps—like bringing in your spare key from the mat or rock outside—can help you achieve greater peace of mind.

We hope that these tips help you enjoy your time away from home, all while having the peace of mind that your home is safe and ready for you when you return.
